In the USA, the excess medical expenditure (compared to individuals without visual impairments) was $2.5 billion in 2004 which was primarily attributed to homecare. From a socioeconomic standpoint, blindness has a negative effect on educational and occupational opportunities as well as medical expenditure. The negative impacts of this condition on individual physical and mental health include a higher risk of chronic health conditions, unintentional injuries, social withdrawal, depression, and mortality. In 2015, a total of 1.02 million people were blind in the USA and it is projected to double to approximately 2.01 million people by 2050. Globally, 32.4 million people were blind in 2010 which has increased by 600,000 since 1990. The number of blind individuals has been increasing around the world and the USA.
